St. Martin's Cross

This cross was sculpted from a single slab of stone between AD 750 and 800. It is situated west of the main entrance to Iona Abbey, and is the original cross.

The east side of the stone is carved with bosses and serpents. The west face of the cross is carved with scenes from the bible.

The cross depicts a number of scenes. In the centre is the Virgin & Child, below is Daniel & the Lions, then Abraham & raised sword to sacrifice Isaac, David playing the harp, David & Goliath and David with Saul.
