THE ABBEY RESTORATION

1874-6 - The eighth Duke of Argyll commissioned an architect to consolidate the ruins.

1899  - Duke transferred ownership to Iona Cathedral Trust.  A deed of trust committing the restoration of the church for public worship

1902 - Restoration commenced

bullet

1910 - Work on nave completed

bullet

1938 - Iona Community established by Reverend George MacLeod and he Brought craftsmen, tradesmen, ministers together to rebuild the Abbey completely

1965 - Present buildings completed.

bullet

1979 - The island of Iona was bought from the trustees of the Argyll Estate.

bullet

1979 by the Fraser Foundation and given to the nation in the care of “The National Trust for Scotland”.

bullet

2000 - Iona Cathedral Trust relinquished care of the Abbey, Reilig Odhrains St Ronan’s Church and the Nunnery to Historic Scotland.
